Microsoft word - testing capacity at regional fish inspection & quality control laboratory strengthened

Testing of shrimp and shrimp product for residues of veterinary drugs which had been banned by EU and other importing nations due to their genotoxic and carcinogenic properties, is a pre-requisite for exporting. Even though LCMS/MS based methods are in place in Bangladesh, there is an urgent need for rapid, high throughput screening methods for tissue-bound residues of the nitrofurans and Chloramphenicol. Drug residues specially nitrofuran metabolites such as AOZ (3-amino-2-oxazolidinone), (3-amino-5-morpholino-methyl-1,3-oxa-zolidinone), (semicarbazide) and Chloramphenicol (CAP) can be identified in shrimp and its products by cheaper and faster screening technique like Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) method. Better Work & Standards- Better Fisheries Quality (BEST-BFQ) project being implementing by UNIDO and funded by EU, NORAD and Government of Bangladesh procured two LCMS/MS machines and installed at Dhaka FIQC laboratories, costing about 700,000 EURO (8 crore TK). They will soon be shifted to regional laboratory at Khulna to facilitate quicker testing at the source of the most of the samples. In addition to these, BEST-BFQ procured ELISA kits in each regional laboratory to facilitate screening tests for the Tetracyclines and the residues of banned drugs such as nitrofurans and Chloramphenicol, realizing the importance of screening methods for testing these residues. Currently, testing capacity of nitrofurans metabolites have been developed at regional FIQC laboratory using Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) procedure for screening test with the assistance of Better Fisheries Component of BEST project (Better Work and Standards Program). The laboratory staffs have already been trained on using ELISA for Tetracyclines in 2011 and these are being tested routinely at both regional laboratories. Methods for ELISA testing of CAP, AOZ, AMOZ, AHD and SEM have recently been validated according to EU guideline, to check its fitness for purpose and found that all the methods are suitable for testing the said residues in shrimp and its products before sending them to EU or US markets. With these developments at regional laboratory, now exporter will get reliable and widely acceptable pre-export testing service in a reasonable short time.
