LUIGI MAGNANO (1925 - 2009)
On July 3, 2009, his 84th birthday, Luigi Magnano left us forever, after a quite short but painful illness which forced him to stop all his entomological work. It was truly a sad news for me, who knew him since 1972 when I, then a young student with my interest already focused on weevils, came to Verona as a “pilgrim” to visit museums in northern Italy, to get literature, to know in person people who, like myself, had been fascinated by those wonderful little creatures. I was immediately impressed by the helpfulness, extreme kindness and altruism of Luigi and his family, who welcomed me more as a friend than as a visitor. Our friendship increased across the years, particularly after 1992, when Luigi devoted all himself to entomology. Luigi Magnano was born in Melilli, Sicily on July 3, 1925, but very soon his family moved to northern Italy, first in Padua, then in Verona where his father Angelo, tailor, opened a tailor’s house. During his excursions around Verona and its hills, the boy was immediately fascinated by the insects, of which it was then plentiful there. First of four brothers, his father wanted him to became a skilled tailor, this for being sure that his own work will continue, and for providing an income for the family in those difficult times. Luigi became a tailor, renowned in Italy and Europe, his suits were those of several personalities, probably the one in Italy, to produce for instance fox-hunting clothes. During his tailoring, he won the Italian prize “Golden Scissors”, and had several public speeches, also on Italian television. From time to time he came to Rome, where always we met for a talk about our common interest. Indeed, despite his restless professional activity, every evening - or better night - at least a couple of hours were devoted by him to study curculionids, always listening classical music, on which he was keen and a connoisseur, especially of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Luigi was skilful also in all kind of bricolage, he himself made sweeping and beating nets, sifters, Berlese funnels, insects boxes and even the cabinets where his collection and library are stored today. Recently he made a wooden support for a microscope illuminator, and another complicate device, obtained from a large can, to take digital shoots of specimens. During some 50 years of tailoring Luigi never stopped studying insects, which, together with the classical music, were his true passions, always supported by his wife Maria Rosa Magrini, married in 1956, and who was always with him in every moment of his life. At the age of 20 he was admitted in the “Società Entomologica Italiana”, and in the same year, 1945, he became a collaborator of the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale of Verona. His connection with the museum of “his” town never stopped, starting from its reconstruction after the war made by his close friends Angelo Pasa and Sandro Ruffo, passing through the arrival as curator - also strongly supported by Luigi - in 1964 of Giuseppe Osella, with whom he collaborated during several years. Luigi was a founder of the “Gruppo Italiano Biogeografi”, presently “Società Italiana di Biogeografia”. In 1979, he joined Coleopterologische Verein”, and soon after the “Curculio Institute”. Starting from his first collectings near Verona, his interest focused almost immediately on weevils, particularly those of the genus Otiorhynchus, plentiful of species living in the Alps and huge enough to easily attract every beginner of curculionids. However, his first two papers deal with Liparus, another difficult genus of large-sized weevils species abundant in the Alps. Across the years Luigi, who learned the German language then more than today essential for anybody willing to deal with taxonomy, got in touch with the esteemed entomologists of that time, first of all Ferdinando Solari, president of the Italian Entomological Society at that time and a renowned taxsonomist of weevils. Incidentally he bought the Scolytidae collection of Solari after his death, and he donated the collection later to the Verona natural history museum. He was in touch also with Wagner, Marshall, Voss, Dieckmann, Smreczyński, Petryszak, Alonso-Zarazaga, Davidian, Yunakov and several others, even if the spare time his profession and his home life allowed him was very short. Since 1967 his interest tended decidedly towards Entiminae, although Luigi never stopped studying other groups, and the list of his publications below gives evidence of this. To solve the complicate taxonomical problems of the several parthenogenetic species of some tribes of entimines, he got in touch with the geneticists team of Luciano Bullini from 1980 to 2002, when his bad health - Luigi underwent two heart operations in a short interval - forced him to stop this cooperation. With the Baccio Baccetti team he studied the spermatozoa of Curculionoidea towards a better understanding of the relationships between the families of this coleopteran group, collaborating also with his daughter Anna Rosa who presently teaches at the Siena University. This testifies his many-sided interests always turned to a solid taxonomy not only based on morphology. After 1992, free from tailoring, Luigi could at last exclusively devote himself to his favourite Otiorhynchini. In order to solve the several nomenclatoric problems he visited, almost always with me, the natural history museums of Basel, Berlin, Budapest, Dresden, Geneve, Munich, Prague, Vienna. It is so pleasant for me to remember our trips by car across Europe looking out of the window at the new landscape, talking of weevils and making plans of future publications, coming back to Italy full of types, copied literature, and common opinions. The idea of producing a catalogue of the around 2000 species of Otiorhynchini so far known dated from our first trip, and immediately Luigi started it as he came back home. During the 1996 International Congress of Entomology held in Florence Luigi had a speech, printed in 1998, about a new taxonomic arrangement of Otiorhynchus on which was based any further study of this speciose and difficult genus and of the close ones. Luigi drew up the tribe Otiorhynchini for the Fauna Europaea project granted by the European Community, and a few years later published the list of the Italian Otiorhynchus species and of their localities within the project “Basic knowledge of Italian species” sponsored by the University of Calabria. Since 2002, he is a member of the “Accademia dei Fisiocritici” of Siena. To acknowledge his scientific work, in 2003 the National Academy of Entomology appointed him as academician, a honour seldom given to someone being not an university professor. Luigi described on his 83 published papers more than 100 Otiorhynchus species, and over 20 of closely related genera, besides other weevils. His collection of some 3800 weevil species includes more than 900 Otiorhynchus species, some 2/3 of those so far described, with several types. His huge library, besides the specialized papers, is also rich of numerous books dealing with general biology. It is here worthy to mention that the Luigi collection of antique and rare books and etchings on tailoring across centuries, partly collected by his father, was donated by him to the Verona museum some years ago. Several were the publications on which Luigi was working. Among them, the Otiorhynchini part of the “Catalogue of the order Coleoptera of the Palaearctic Region”, edited by A. Smetana. Above all, however, he was revising the Otiorhynchini from central Asia, a task of paramount importance for understanding origin and relationships of Otiorhynchus with other genera of his tribe, but only the first results of this study are published. What always impressed me, as well as everyone who was so lucky to meet Luigi, has been his broadmindness, both to others and to new ideas. Well on in years, he was always very willing to learn new things, and to embark in new projects. It was so easy for him, already over 75, to learn some English, to use computers, to cope with internet and with all new digital technologies. Even during his illness, his entomological activity was lately so enthusiastic, that today it seems impossible to me not to be able to send him a message and get an immediate reply, not to share with him the subtle pleasure of discovering something unexpected, to discuss together about bizarre ideas occurring to every biologist on how truly works this fascinating mysterious force which drives genesis and transformations of living creatures. In June 2009, the last time I visited him, he, although a great deal suffering, still told me about his research and his new ideas on taxonomy of Palaearctic Otiorhynchini. When a man of the Luigi kind leaves the stage is like the loss of a strip of pluvial forest, a world of knowledge and of potential discoveries gone forever.
